what it’s all about

Experience the magic of the Serengeti ecosystem.

We take safari up a notch: get a front row saddle to the most magical show - zebras, giraffes, lions and elephants (Tarangire has the largest concentration of elephants in Africa). You’ll experience East Africa’s most iconic wildlife from your bike.

Breathtaking landscapes.

Start surrounded by the most epic (dormant, phew!) volcanoes, including Africa’s highest peak, Kilimanjaro. Just imagine, cycling quiet roads near Kili’s imposing snow capped peak. End the week on the beautifully vast and open plains of the Serengeti ecosystem.

Top tier hospitality.

From the rustic charm of eco-camps set on the fertile foothills of Kili to luxurious lodges buried deep in Tarangire National Park to cliff-edge resorts overlooking Lake Manyara, you'll experience the best of Kenyan and Tanzanian hospitality with Ride Africa.

Awe-inspiring adventure

This route goes beyond adventure. Nothing but sleepy villages, banana plantations, elephant crossings and alpine forests - all with the imposing Kili as the backdrop. Switch off and immerse yourself in East Africa’s rural beauty.

Fully supported by a brilliant team.

Expert cycle guides and mechanics - led by David Kinjah; Medics supporting on health, safety and well-being; and a solid Logistics Team ensuring you get from start to finish!

FAQs

  • Your trip fee covers: accommodation from Saturday - Saturday at a series of safari lodges, camps and resorts; transport from Nairobi to the start point on the opening Saturday and return to Kilimanjaro international airport on the following Saturday (as well as all transfers and transport in between); food and water - 3 daily meals, and snacks and water throughout the day; a mountain bike, mechanics and guides - your bike will be fitted to you and our guides are on hand to fix any mechanical issues. Professional guides are on hand to manage the peleton, your safety and comfort; National Park entrance fees and permits - your fee covers the permit to cycle through National Parks and conservancies, and the support of park rangers who will escort us through the parks. Parks and conservancies rely heavily on entrance fees and permits to maintain and conserve the parks, so by riding with us, you’re supporting conservation efforts too!

Your fees do NOT cover: your flights to and from Kenya/Tanzania, your entry visa, personal travel insurance, additional soft or alcoholic drinks, additional travel or hotel accommodation beyond the travel package dates.

  • Flights. We will be leaving Nairobi on the Saturday morning. Therefore, you should make sure your flight arrives into Nairobi Jomo International Airport before 8am on Saturday 2st November so that you can meet the buses that will take you the start point in Amboseli.

Your return flight should be from Kilimanjaro International Airport after 6pm on Saturday 28th November. We will get a transfer from our final hotel at Lake Manyara to Kili airport on this day. From here, flight back home or onward to another destination (sunny Zanzibar?).

From Kilimanjaro International Airport, there are daily flights back to Europe, typically with a stop in NBO/Addis. We recommend looking for multi-city tickets as these can sometimes be cheaper than 2x single airfares and are easy to compare/contrast on travel search engines.

  • Yes - groups of 10 or more are eligible for a 10% discount on their trip fees. Speak to the team for more information.

  • Yes. We ask that all participants commit to fundraising £2,000 (€2,400). It is our job to guide and support you to reach this target and we’ll be on hand to support you all the way.

If you are nervous about fundraising, please give us a call or get in touch. We are professional fundraisers so we’ll give you all the tips and tricks we have!

Alternatively, you can choose to donate the £2,000 target. Get in touch with the team if you’d like this option.

  • We are limited to 60 places per event and anticipate high demand so we recommend signing up as soon as you are ready to commit.

If you’re seriously interested but can’t commit yet, do get in touch with the team and make yourself known - we’ll keep you in the loop and make sure you know when/if spots on your chosen ride are likely to sell out.

  • Ride Africa covers up to 500km in 5 days. You will need to be comfortable riding a bike on hard-packed roads (not just tarmac) and have experience cycling for multiple hours in a day. Ride Africa is an achievable distance, but the conditions will be tough (lumpy bumpy tracks in East African heat!). We recommend you follow our 12-week training plan and the advice we have on our training page to make sure you are ready to ride.

Ride Africa is not a race and no one gets left behind. We have a broom wagon following us for anyone who needs a break/rest and will manage our pace to keep the group together. If you need to take a day out, or an afternoon to rest, the broom wagon is there for you.

Check out our training page to download a 12-week plan; and how to prepare for Ride Africa.

  • No. We will provide all cyclists with entry-level mountain bikes that are appropriate for the distance and terrain we’ll be covering. These are Trek Marlin hardtail bikes with a 10-speed chain (so 10 gears in total) and are the perfect spec for the conditions of the ride.

We will ask you for your height before you arrive in Kenya, match you to a frame and then when you arrive the bike will be fitted to you. This will be your bike for the week. You can bring your own saddle and pedals with you to be fitted to the bike, and you might like to bring your own handlebar grips.

  • Our route is planned with consultation from local cycle guides, National Parks authorities and our team. We’ll update our website and the riders who have signed up with the planned stages and approximate distances (and end stops!) once they are finalised.

We will have a fairly detailed outline of the route which we will send to you in the weeks before your ride is due. However, please bear in mind that rainfall, animal migrations and poaching, group size and road conditions can affect our plans and so we may need to mitigate, shorten or change some of the route.

  • We’ll send you a full, updated kit list a month before you’re due to depart. In the meantime, do look at the training kit advised on our training page - it details the equiptment you’ll need to be using on your training.
